A Call for Stories!
Drop in to Royal Wootton Bassett Library from 10am – 1pm on Saturday 24 September and share any stories, images, objects or information that you might have about Wiltshire and the First World War.
For instance, did your family live in Wiltshire during the First World War? Did they join up to fight overseas or ‘do their bit’ back at home? If you have a story to tell about how your relatives, friends’ relatives, or local people, helped the war effort during the First World War then we’d love to talk to you. Do you know how Wiltshire changed during the First World War, how the county got things done during war-time, or about the entertainment of the time, we would love to hear about it. Also if you have any stories / information about the lasting effects of the war on families and the county, then come and share them with us.
In September 2014 Carol Treloar shared a story about her Grandfather, Frank Davis, with the Wiltshire at War project. Frank was from Market Lavington and was unable to enlist in 1914 due to a childhood hip injury; he still managed to do his bit by growing vegetables and transporting them using his horse and cart to Lavington station to go to London Hospital, Whitechapel. You can find out more about Frank’s story, and read a letter of thanks to him from London Hospital on the Wiltshire at War website here.
Come along to Royal Wootton Bassett Library and have a chat with us; bring along any photos, letters, diaries, or relevant objects for us to look at – and we will add your story to the Wiltshire at War: Community Stories collection.
