“Under Fire: the Women Of The First Aid Yeomanry” by Emma Shelley
Wednesday 22 June, 7pm (Royal Wootton Bassett Library)
The women of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry in the First World War were an astounding bunch of women. They overcame tremendous obstacles, ridicule and governmental disapproval to play an invaluable role in the nursing of wounded soldiers and driving ambulances across the Western Front, often under fire. Their irrepressible humour in the face of adversity made them a role model for women everywhere and is now largely forgotten.
In this talk we meet some of the pioneering women (and men!) who created this astonishing group and hear about some of the high jinks that war didn’t put them off enjoying!
